Storage locations in SMaSCH
Dick Moe writes:
Storage location is potentially tracked in the SMASCH table Annotation_as_filed in the field collectionkind_id.  We currently have the following collectionkinds:
- Main (=default)
- Fruit and Cone
- liquid preserved
- long-term processing
- display
- exsiccatae
- historical
- Moorea
- Types
- Reference
- Horticultural
- Indefinite loan
We have not made much use of the field, nor have we maintained the data in the field consistently. By that I mean, for example, that there has been no effort to update the field if a specimen has been removed from the reference collection (which is supposed to have 6106 specimens according to the table)
I think that collectionkind_id can be directly mapped to CS::storage_location
objkind_id is descriptive, not locational, although certain objkind_ids would never be found associated with certain collectionkind_ids.Â
With respect to filing name: The current name is always stored in annotation_asfiled::taxon_id. annotation_asfiled::genus_id represents the cabinet location. It is usually the same as the genus part of the current name. That is, the genus_id of specimens with a taxon_id corresponding to Packera cana ordinarily would correspond to Packera. However, to accommodate nomenclatural transfers not accompanied by physical
movement of the specimens, the genus_id can be any taxon_id. So that if half of the species of Packera must be transferred to Senecio
the specimens of the nomenclaturally transferred taxa could remain where they were. Their taxon_id would change, but the genus_id (representing their physical location) could remain the same. We have used this feature sparingly.
